REACT is a £6M+ UKRI-supported Green Economy Centre: a world-leading research initiative supporting the electronic, ICT, semiconductor, quantum and photonics industries in transitioning to a circular economy and reducing emissions

THE NEED FOR REACT

As the UK's first cross-institution research centre for sustainable electronics, REACT is led by the University of Glasgow, in collaboration with  the University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University, and the Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult.

REACT offers companies and academics involved in electronic, photonic and material technologies access to facilities for manufacturing, repair, recycling and material recovery, alongside tailored academic expertise and business support.

Electronics are the backbone of the digital transformation shaping businesses, industries, and society. This drives innovation in everything from healthcare to aerospace, and underpins the technologies for the Internet of Things (IoT), modern automation, and 5G/6G communication.

Despite its transformative impact, the electronics industry is challenged with:

  • Rising amounts of e-waste and discarded electronics

  • High emissions across the supply chain

  • A reliance on scarce critical raw materials

Challenges

The electonics industry shares these challenges

E-waste

Rising amounts of e-waste and discarded electronics

Emissions

High emissions across the supply chain

Scarcity

Reliance on scarce cricital raw materials

SETTING THE STANDARD FOR SUSTAINABLE ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURING AND DESIGN

The industry needs a shift toward sustainable practices – and REACT is leading the way.

OUR VISION

To develop the centre and its unique capabilities into a European Centre of Excellence in Scotland for sustainable electronic materials, manufacturing, material recovery, economic modelling and responsible innovation strategies

OUR MISSION

To develop sustainable manufacturing solutions - durable, repairable, and recyclable products from abundant materials.

To support and accelerate the UK’s net-zero strategy by reducing carbon emissions and e-waste

To establish interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle global challenges

REACT combines state-of-the-art equipment, cutting-edge facilities, and academic expertise to help companies and academic partners leverage new technologies, expand into emerging markets, and gain a competitive commercial edge.

LET'S REACT TO THIS CHALLENGE TOGETHER
